Cleveland Construction Inc. Opens Charlotte, North Carolina Office to Accommodate Growth

A decade after entering the Charlotte market, Ohio-based Cleveland Construction Inc. is putting down roots with a new regional office in Ballantyne, while announcing plans to hire more employees as the firm secures construction projects throughout North Carolina and the surrounding region.

Over the last decade, Cleveland Construction Inc. has completed $150 million worth of construction projects in Charlotte, including multiple large-scale retail projects and several well-known hotels like the Hyatt Place Hotel in Uptown, which was completed in late 2013.

One prominent hotel project in particular—the AC Hotel and Residence Inn by Marriott, a $52 million dual-branded hotel that broke ground in October 2015—prompted the firm to set up a permanent presence in the city. Earlier this year, the firm relocated Vice President of Construction David Sawicki from Cleveland to Charlotte to oversee regional operations and client development by establishing a local office.

“Having a big multi-year project like this enabled us to sustain an office here. This hotel has gotten us a lot of exposure in this market and opened the door to more regional projects,” says Sawicki, who has been with Cleveland Construction Inc. full-time since 1999 (and as an intern before that). “In order for Cleveland Construction Inc. to grow to the next level, we can’t do it all from Cleveland. We need to establish regional offices to build on our existing work, and Charlotte was a no-brainer because it’s one of the fastest growing regions in the country.”

Though the firm’s regional growth has centered on the dual-branded hotel, several other recently awarded projects are contributing to its growth—including the $46 million Arras (the tallest building in Asheville), which was awarded in September, scheduled to begin in December and slated for completion in fall 2018; and the $18.5 million SpringHill Suites Marriott in Brentwood, Tenn., which was awarded last month.

To accommodate this recent growth, Sawicki relocated several employees from the firm’s other offices to Charlotte, in addition to bringing local talent onto the team—a hiring mix that he says will maintain consistency with the firm’s culture and established processes while leveraging local market experience. Currently, 14 employees work out of the Charlotte office, and Sawicki plans to hire 12 more people over the next 6 months, including a client development manager, more project managers and superintendents, and administrative staff to support them.

With $3 billion worth of construction projects being planned in Charlotte, Cleveland Construction Inc. is pursuing opportunities across the region in market sectors spanning retail, office buildings, hotels and hospitality, multi-family and mixed-use developments. By strengthening its local market presence in Charlotte, Cleveland Construction Inc. continues to scale its reputation across the country.
