Beckworth Hotel Begins Office-to-Hotel Conversion in Uptown Charlotte
Cleveland Construction, Inc., a national construction management firm specializing in adaptive reuse construction, begins construction on the redevelopment of the historic Johnston Building in Uptown Charlotte into The Beckworth Hotel, a 240-key boutique hotel.
Located at 212 S. Tryon Street, the Johnston Building was originally constructed in 1924 and expanded in 1929 to 17 stories. Once the tallest building in Charlotte, this 200,000-square-foot structure is now being transformed into a 240-key boutique hotel.
The Beckworth Hotel will feature luxury guest rooms, a ground-floor restaurant and coffee shop, a 10,000-square-foot meeting area, and a 3,500-square-foot ballroom with sweeping views of Uptown Charlotte. The redevelopment will preserve the building’s iconic limestone facade and other historically significant interior elements.
The project will convert former office space into:
· 240 luxury guest rooms
· A ground-floor restaurant and coffee shop
· 10,000 square feet of meeting space
· A 3,500 square foot ballroom overlooking Uptown Charlotte
Cleveland Construction is serving as the historic adaptive reuse construction manager for this project. Our team is overseeing the careful restoration and modernization of the building while meeting the preservation standards required for historic tax credits.

The project is being designed by Gensler with interiors by Workstead. It is also targeting LEED Silver certification.
Demolition of the building began in Q4 2024, with completion and hotel opening expected in late 2026.
