Cleveland Construction Completes Helicopter Lift at The Beckworth Hotel
Cleveland Construction successfully completed a 25-piece helicopter lift at The Beckworth Hotel in Uptown Charlotte, placing a full set of rooftop mechanical equipment on the historic Johnston Building in less than 3-hours on the morning of August 8th.
The lift clears the way for roof replacement work to continue on the 240-key boutique hotel conversion and wrapped without any safety issues.
Lifting heavy mechanical equipment onto a rooftop in the middle of Uptown Charlotte is not something one team can pull off alone.
Cleveland Construction led the planning and coordination across every party with a stake in the operation, including subcontractors Advance Mechanical Systems, Inc. and Midwest Helicopter Airways, along with the FAA, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, and the City of Charlotte.
That coordination started months before the helicopter ever left the ground, with road closures, safety briefings, and a detailed job hazard analysis all lined up in advance to keep the public safe and the job on schedule.
The crew arrived before sunrise to stage trucks and rig equipment for the first lift. At 6 a.m., Cleveland Construction brought every party together for a safety huddle to walk through the plan, review the job hazard analysis, and confirm the perimeter was secure.
Roads around the site were closed and police officers staged to manage the public safety impact before the first load left the ground. By 7 a.m., the lift was underway, with loads sequenced from smallest to largest so the heaviest piece, a full cooling tower, went up last. All 25 lifts were complete by 9 a.m.
Advance Mechanical Systems, Inc. supplied the equipment and handled the rigging and placement work on the roof, staying on site through midday to finish positioning equipment and clear the area of packaging and rigging materials. Their work, paired with Cleveland Construction's coordination across the city agencies involved, kept the road closures and the operation contained to a single morning.
The scale of this lift, and the number of outside parties it took to execute safely in a dense downtown corridor, made this one of the more demanding logistical milestones on The Beckworth Hotel to date. With the rooftop mechanical equipment now in place, roof replacement work continues on the structural steel and decking work begun earlier this year.
