Cleveland Construction served as site and shell contractor for DeCar Management on the renovation of an existing shopping center on Washington Street. Our work prepared an 18,885 square-foot space for a new Aldi store, bringing an older retail building up to Aldi’s prototype standards so the interior build-out could start on a finished, code-ready shell.
The facade follows Aldi’s prototypical design, giving the store the same storefront customers recognize at locations nationwide. Building a prototype onto an existing structure means fitting standard elements to walls and openings that were not designed for them, and our crews adapted the design to the building as it stood.
Behind the store, we modified the truck dock and built a 317-square-foot building expansion to support it. Delivery trucks reach the dock through a dedicated lane along the dry retention area, marked for delivery traffic only. This keeps trucks out of the customer lot entirely, which matters for a grocery store that takes frequent deliveries throughout the week. Bollards protect the building corners where trucks turn.
Out front, we rebuilt the parking lot and entrances along Washington Street. The work included 255 feet of new curb, a 10-foot landscape buffer, new stop bars and pavement markings at both driveways, relocated light poles, and fire lane striping along the west side of the building. Marked pedestrian crossings and accessible parking stalls with curb ramps connect the lot to a new 8-foot sidewalk running the length of the storefronts. We also built a new trash enclosure set away from the store entrance.
The Aldi work was part of a larger investment in the center. Next door, Cleveland Construction also completed the Burlington tenant build-out, finishing the interior of the 60,000-square-foot store that anchors the property.
