Adaptive Reuse Construction
Historic Conversion on Uptown Charlotte's Johnston Building
Cleveland Construction, Inc. is the historic adaptive reuse construction manager for the redevelopment of the Johnston Building in Uptown Charlotte into The Beckworth Hotel, a 240-key boutique hotel.
Originally constructed in 1924 as a 15-story office building, the Johnston Building was the tallest structure in Charlotte until 1926. In 1929, two additional levels were added, bringing the total height to 17 stories. The building, which spans approximately 200,000 square feet, features a terracotta and brick veneer exterior with a steel and concrete structure.
The adaptive reuse project will transform the former office space into a luxury hotel featuring 240 guest rooms, a ground-floor restaurant and coffee shop, a 10,000-square-foot meeting area, and a 3,500-square-foot ballroom with expansive views of Uptown Charlotte. In keeping with its historic designation, the redevelopment will preserve key architectural elements, including the building’s iconic façade and other historically significant interior features.
Cleveland Construction’s role as the historic adaptive reuse construction manager involves overseeing the careful restoration and modernization of the structure while adhering to preservation guidelines necessary for historic tax credit eligibility. With extensive experience in adaptive reuse projects, Cleveland Construction is committed to delivering a high-quality renovation that both honors the building’s past and meets the demands of today’s hospitality industry.
The redevelopment began in the 4th quarter of 2024 with completion and hotel opening in late 2026.
The redevelopment aims to maintain the building’s historic integrity while repurposing it for modern hospitality use, with the design led by Charlotte-based Gensler as the architect and Brooklyn-based Workstead as the interior designer. The project is also pursuing LEED Silver certification.
