Cleveland Construction served as the general contractor to the City of Cleveland for the exterior façade rehabilitation at Cleveland Hopkins International (CLE) Airport located in Cleveland, Ohio. These improvements were carried out to improve the airport in response to the city hosting the 2016 Republican National Convention.

Exterior façade improvements began with the demolition of the existing façade and canopy enclosures, followed by the installation of a new 600-linear-foot metal panel clad canopy structure. Skylights were embedded in the canopy, which extends approximately 12 feet farther than the previous façade to shelter passengers on the Departure Level.

Performing demolition and renovation work outside an occupied facility that has an extremely high volume of public vehicular and foot traffic presented a unique challenge that required extensive daily planning and coordination with subcontractors and airport management to work safely and protect facility personnel and the public from any potential dangers associated with the work.

The project was completed in two phases – Phase 1 involved working on the northern exterior of the airport, while Phase 2 focused on the airport’s southern exterior. Our team’s phasing plan and schedule resulted in completing the project 3 weeks earlier than anticipated, thereby allowing the airport extra time to prepare for the influx of traveling passengers to the airport for the 2016 Republican National Convention.

Additionally, Cleveland Construction met all majority participation and local workforce goals established by the City of Cleveland.
