On Monday, March 6th, 2023, Riley Small, Development Manager at Cleveland Construction, kicked off Women in Construction Week 2023 by delivering an insightful presentation titled "Real Estate & Early Project Development" to Kent State University's Construction Management Student Organization. Over 35 students from Interior Design, Architecture, and Construction Management programs (including professors) attended her presentation.
Riley discussed various topics related to the construction industry. She shared her personal experiences within the industry and offered insights into the career opportunities available for women. She also talked about the current trends in the construction market and the pre-and post-construction efforts of project development.
Riley touched upon zoning challenges that developers shuffle through and the steps required before land can be developed. She also discussed the volatile interest rate market and how developers and General Contractors can operate successfully in these conditions. Riley also highlighted the importance of performing feasibility and financial studies before developing.
Riley's presentation also shed light on the role that women play in construction today during Women In Construction Week. Her insights and experiences inspire and attract the next generation of construction professionals, especially women, who are interested in the construction industry.
As the Development Manager at Cleveland Construction, Riley is responsible for overseeing the company's real estate portfolio and identifying new investment and development opportunities for Small Brothers, LLC and Cleveland Construction.
Riley's presentation was a roadmap for young women looking to enter the construction industry and made a significant contribution to the success of Women in Construction Week 2023.
